"Specializing in helping people with learning disabilities to recognize their strengths and learning styles while overcoming their hurdles in school and work." |
||||
Cheryl Nicholson Winnipeg, Manitoba chezo@hotmail.com
     I have worked with children, adolescents, and adults with learning disabilities for a number of years. Providing one to one tutoring,
development of specialized teaching/learning strategies based on personal strengths and weaknesses, advocacy, educational and workplace
related accommodation recommendations, and one to one counselling for children, youth, and adults. It is important for individuals with
learning disabilities to develop an understanding of their particular learning strengths and weaknesses, develop strategies to help them
compensate learning weakness and draw on their learning strengths for optimum success in educational and workplace settings. Everyone
learns differently, and knowledge of one's individual cognitive and sensory learning styles and best practices for studying can lead to
academic success. I work with students at all educational levels from early elementary to university. Early intervention is important
for minimizing the negative impact learning disabilties can have on social, emotional, and psychological development. I also provide support
to adults with learning disabilities who want to develop better self understanding, secure and maintain employment, or wish to futher their education.
It's never to early or too late for learning disability intervention!
     I conduct both quantitative and qualitative research in the areas of learning disabilities, education, and adult literacy. I am a graduate student at the University of Manitoba, in the Department of Sociology. Currently, I am working on the thesis requirement for completing my Masters of Arts Degree. The focus of this research involves developing a substantive theory about the lived experiances of individuals with learning disabilities that highlight the challenges and barriers they experiance and their identified solutions. Research in this area is limited. Developing a better understanding of the lived experiences of individuals with learning disabilities can lead to the development of better educational programming and policies for promoting educational success for students at all educational levels.      I achieved my Bachelor of Arts Advanced degree, majoring in physcology and with course credit equivalents of two minors in sociology and linguistics. The course work focus in both my undergraduate and graduate degrees have been in the areas of child and adolescent development, development and deviantion, social policy and structures, social psychology, linguistics, education,criminology, mental health, memory, cognitive process, and research methodologies. |
